In a pre-Super Bowl interview with Fox News Channel’s Bill O’Reilly, President Trump was asked about Russia, and O’Reilly called Russian President Vladimir Putin a “killer” a couple of times, to which Pres Trump said “there’s a lot of killers, you think our country is so innocent?”
People on the left and the right immediately lost their minds, saying it was unAmerican, a terrible thing to say, etc etc etc. I’m sorry but I never see telling the truth as being unAmerican. It may not be popular, and most American’s would like to look the other way and think of our country as perfect, but reality doesn’t bare that out.
I served in the US Army for 7 years. I deployed and traveled all over the world including Afghanistan and Iraq. When you’re in combat, trying to keep the man to your left and right alive, you will do whatever it takes. I’m not talking about war crimes, or anything like that. But the reality is that innocent people are killed during war. America has unfortunately killed untold numbers of innocent civilians while waging war in Afghanistan, Iraq, and all over the world in military and covert operations. President Obama is widely known for using Drones to attack our enemies, instead of capturing enemies and gathering intelligence, he nearly always chose to fire missiles or drop bombs from a UAV, often killing innocents in and around the target location. It was also the Obama Administration that knowingly killed a US citizen overseas because he was fighting with the terrorist organizations we are at war against.
This country was founded by the massacre of the Native American people. The ones that weren’t killed were forced into an ever shrinking piece of land as the “New World” marched west claiming land as their own to fulfill “Manifest Destiny.”
Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t suffer from any guilt, I’m not at all sorry for what my country has done, and will do to remain great. I’m just saying we need to be Intellectually Honest here. The US has a long history of killing others to meet it’s own needs or wants.
You don’t get to try to claim morale high ground and put another nation down for their own fight to make their country great, just because we feel our deeds are honorable. You don’t get to call someone else out for something when you yourself are guilty of the very same misdeeds.
So lets be honest with ourselves, and with the world. America is a great and powerful nation, Our values and ideals are to stand as a “shining city on the hill” for all other nations to aspire to be more like. We are also a nation that grew in size through the near eradication of an entire race, kill innocents in times of war, ignore our own issues at home while telling the world how to best fix their problems.
Don’t be sorry for it, don’t try to apologize for a past you weren’t a part of, just be honest about it, and keep that in mind before you try to call out the rest of the world for being just like us.
